निबंध : कुटज - आचार्य हजारी प्रसाद द्विवेदी जी (लेखक)
इस निबंध में लेखक कुटज वृक्ष की संघर्ष शक्ति और विशेषता का वर्णन मानव के जीवन के साथ करते हैं। लेखक कहते हैं कि कुटज शिवाली की सूखी नीरज पहाड़ियों पर जहां कई अन्य वनस्पति अर्थात फूल फल दिखाई नहीं पड़ती। वहां कुटज वृक्ष मुस्कुराता हुआ मिल जाता है। इसीलिए लेखक ने कुटज को उजाड़ का साथी कहा है।

लेखक नाम की महानता के बारे में सोचकर कहता है कि किसी कारणवश उसके ध्यान से कुटज नामक वृक्ष का नाम उतर जाता है। तभी वह कहता है कि नाम तो समाज का सत्य है परंतु रूप व्यक्ति का सत्य है।
आचार्य हजारी प्रसाद जी कहते हैं कि कालिदास के मेघदूत में कुटज फूल का प्रयोग में के पूजा के लिए किया गया है तथा रहीम दास ने भी अपने दोहे में कुटज की विशेषताओं का उल्लेख किया है।
कुटज एक अपराजित जीवनी एवं संघर्ष क्षमता का फूल अर्थात वृक्ष है। कुटज विपरीत परिस्थितियों में भी मस्ती के साथ उल्लास के साथ जीने की कला का वर्णन करता है। अर्थात लेखक चाहते हैं कि कुटज जिस प्रकार विशेष गर्मी में भी हरा-भरा और फूलों से लगा रहता है, ठीक उसी प्रकार मनुष्य अपने जीवन के संघर्ष को मुस्कुरा कर क्यों नहीं जी सकता। लेखक कहते हैं कि कुटज भीख नहीं मांगते। वह भयभीत नहीं रहता। वह धर्म और नीति का उद्देश्य नहीं देता और ना ही किसी के तलवे से लाता है। इसलिए लिखा चाहता है कि मनुष्य को कुटज की तरह जीवन को जीना सीखें वह संदेश देता है कि दुख और सुख तो मन के विकल्प हैं। सुखी वह है जिसका मन वश में है, दुखी हुआ है जिसका मन पर्वत है अर्थात जो दूसरों को खुशामद करता है। हजारी जी कहते हैं कि कुटज अपने मन पर सवारी करता है। मन को अपने पर सवार नहीं होने देता। मानव मात्र को कुटज का यह संदेश संग्रह करना चाहिए।

Translation In English :
In this essay, the author describes the struggle power and specialty of the Kutaj tree with the life of human. The author says that on the dry Neeraj hills of Kutaj Shivali, where many other vegetation i.e. flowers and fruits are not visible. There the smiling Kutaj tree is found. That is why the author has called Kutz the companion of the desolate.
Thinking about the greatness of the name, the author says that due to some reason the name of the tree named Kutaj gets removed from his meditation. Only then he says that name is the truth of the society but form is the truth of the individual.
Acharya Hazari Prasad ji says that in Kalidas's Meghdoot, Kutaj flower has been used for worship and Rahim Das has also mentioned the characteristics of Kutaj in his couplets.
Kutaj is the flower of an undefeated biography and struggle ability. Kutz describes the art of living with gaiety with fun even in adversity. That is, the author wants that the way the Kutaj remains green and full of flowers even in the special summer, in the same way why can't a man live the struggle of his life by smiling. The author says that Kutz does not beg. He is not afraid. He does not give the purpose of religion and policy, nor does he bring it from anyone's sole. That is why it is written that wants man to learn to live life like Kutz, he gives the message that sorrow and happiness are substitutes of the mind. Happy is the one whose mind is under control, unhappy is the one whose mind is mountain, that is, one who pleases others. Hazari ji says that Kutaj rides on his mind. Do not let the mind ride on you. Human only should collect this message of Kutz.
